Director of Detective Pikachu Sequel Surprises Fans with Unexpected Appointment

Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel is in negotiations to take over helming the Pokemon Detective Pikachu sequel from Rob Letterman.

The eagerly awaited Pokemon Detective Pikachu sequel is now in its final director.

According to Deadline, Jonathan Krisel is engaged with Legendary Pictures to helm the sequel to the 2019 smash. Krisel is well-known for his work in the comedy field on television. He was the co-creator and director of episodes on IFC’s Portlandia, and FX’s Baskets and also appeared in segments on Funny or Die Presents. His feature directorial debut was announced in the year 2019, however, no announcements have been released about the project.

The first Detective Pikachu was written and directed by Rob Letterman and was loosely inspired by the game of the same title. The plot revolved around the story of a teenage boy known as Tim Goodman (Justice Smith) who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his father who went missing. He did so with the assistance of a Pikachu ( Ryan Reynolds ) who only he knows. A favorable review was given to the film’s lead actors as well as the humor and CGI renderings that showcased Pokemon in a real-life setting. The film made $433 million in the world and is considered to be one of the top movies in the popular genre of movie that is based on video gaming.

Nintendo’s Upcoming Films

Legendary announced the possibility of a Detective Pikachu sequel being developed before the film’s release but further details weren’t released at the time. In 2021, Smith said he didn’t think the sequel would ever be released, saying “I believe we need to put aside our hopes. It’s not likely, I believe. I hope so though.” Legendary representatives revealed in the past year that Detective Pikachu2 was in active development. It is also reported that Nintendo is near to completing work on the sequel Pokemon game. It is expected that the Switch will release it.

The next Nintendo experiment to bring its characters to the big screen will be The Super Mario Bros. Movie. The film stars Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy along with Jack Black, Charlie Day, Seth Rogen, and Charlie Day. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 5.

There isn’t a release date for the Detective Pikachu sequel.
